SDNEDC Renewing Members: EDCO, Merriam Mountains, Tri-City Medical Center

Presentation to the Board – Kelly Cunningham, San Diego Institute for Policy Research – Kelly gave an economic report and outlook with a focus North County. With all of the bad news circulating about the economy, San Diego and North County are weathering the storm and should come out of the downturn sooner than other geographic areas. One of the hardest hit areas of the economy has been the building industry with housing and commercial construction down significantly. The agriculture sector will face challenges with the 30% cut in water supplies that began January 2008. Tourism continues to be one of the regions strong performers along with the biotech and high-tech industries.

Kate Keena – TCA - Kate gave a brief update regarding the 241 toll road proposed for the South Orange County area. The project will go before the Coastal Commission on February 6th and they are seeking our support at the hearings. It was noted the board had voted to support the project in July 2007 and recommend that Gary Knight represent SDNEDC at the hearings.

Marketing Committee – Diane Strand, Committee Chair Diane reported that the committee has been working on two projects, the 10th Anniversary of the SDNEDC and the television program. Regarding the anniversary, the committee is putting together a year-long recognition of past and present members, Board Chairs and Executive Directors that have played a part in the organizations success. The celebration will culminate at the 2008 Holiday Luncheon and Award Presentation in December. The committee is also working on the next television program which will focus on the water issues facing San Diego North. We have already secured two sponsors, Poseidon Resources and Valley Center Water District, and are speaking with others about their participation. Once the sponsors are identified the program will go into production.

Public Policy Committee – David Nilson, Committee Chair The committee had a presentation by Peter Drinkwater from the County regarding the renovation of Palomar Airport. Peter provided a detail report on the project and the progress they have achieved. Part of the presentation covered the possibilities if the runway was expanded and regional jets were able to use the airport for commercial passenger service. No action was required since the presentation was informational.

SDNEDC 10th Year Anniversary

The San Diego North Economic Development Council has its 10th year anniversary in 2008. We would like to give everybody a special recognition that helped to shape our organization to what it is today.
