the new traffic circle on Santa Fe Drive that has recently been
completed.
Presentation – City of Carlsbad Update by
Cynthia Haas: Cynthia used a slide show presentation to show
the population growth in Carlsbad which has increased from 63,100 to
95,100 over 15 years. The number of employed people has also
increased, going from 32,134 to 55,310. The top five employers in
Carlsbad are:

Invitrogen • Carlsbad Unified School District • Four Seasons
Resort – Aviara

La Costa Town Square (a new development of 50 acres), the completion
of the Melrose Drive extension, the renovation of Westfield Plaza
Camino Real and the Strawberry Fields/Flower Growing Fields
initiatives.
Marketing Committee –Press Conferences –
Gary Knight briefed the committee on the recently held press
conference at the SDNEDC. The business cluster discussed was
Military/Defense. The participants were Larry Rannals, Major Jason
Johnston and Mark Beard with HirePatriots.com . The topics discussed
were the economic impact the military has on North County and what
might happen if the Miramar base was closed. The subject was covered
in the Economic Chatter column that is printed in the North County
Times every first Friday.
Public Policy Committee – Paul
O'Neal, Committee Chair, reported that the LEAPS project, a
transmission line running north and south from Riverside to San
Diego County, was first presented in San Diego to our organization.
The Public Policy Committee discussed the presentation and the
committee has recommend Nevada Hydro present their project at the
next SDNEDC Board Meeting. The Policy group has recommended to
support the project. Rex Wait, Vice President of Nevada Hydro
Company gave a brief presentation followed by a motion to support
the project. Seconded by Joe Gabaldon, motion
carried.
Tri-City Hospital – There was a discussion in
regards to the next move Tri-City will attempt due to the failure of
the bond measure passing this past election. Paul O'Neal reported
Tri-City will make another attempt to pass a Bond measure in the
November 2006 election by attempting a new marketing approach along
with more precise wording in the proposition language.
The
Committee also suggested SDNEDC host a forum in regards to the
Airport site selection issue. The committee felt September 7th at
Cal State San Marcos would be the best time for such an
event.

| ?Family Disaster
Plans Sent Out |
| |
As Chairman of the Board this
year, I promised to make sure San Diego County is ready for the next
major disaster. The latest step in our commitment to be the best
prepared county in the nation was taken with the mailing of a copy
of the Family Disaster Plan and Personal Survival Guide to all
residents in the county.
The Office of Emergency Services
(OES) did a great job in creating an easy-to-use document that
provides helpful tips for families and individuals before, during
and after a disaster.
Fire season is year-round and with
California vulnerable to earthquakes and other disasters, we have to
be ready. While we hope no one ever has to use the plans; we're
responsible for public safetythat's why we want people to have a
plan and to prepare a checklist of supplies they might need for at
least the first 72 hours of a major disaster.
The plan
advises those completing the document to select alternate evacuation
routes from their home and neighborhood, select a location where
family members can reunite after a disaster, pick an out-of-town
contact for everyone to check in with, and a list of items to be
included in their family disaster kits.
About 1.4 million
disaster plans are being mailed out countywide. It will take about
two weeks for all the plans to reach mailboxes. If you have not
received a plan by August 14, contact the County OES at 858
565-3490. Persons wishing additional copies of the plan can also
download them from the OES Web site at click
here.
I'm grateful for tremendous participation from
local businesses, transportation companies, relief organizations,
fire and law enforcement organizations in getting the word out
through such things as public service announcements and
billboards.
If an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of
cure; at three ounces, there's no measuring how valuable The Family
Disaster Plan and Personal Survival Guide could be to
you.
