Board Meeting Notes from October 13, 2005
Presentation: Larry Fitch, President & CEO of
San Diego Workforce Partnership.
Larry Fitch gave a presentation on the findings of the San
Diego Workforce Partnership 2005 Summit. He emphasized the
importance of promoting education and training as a path to
prosperity. The workforce environment has evolved rapidly
requiring the United States to compete with many centers of
production and consumption globally. Companies are locating
their businesses in areas where the talent pool is rich and
diverse.
Larry stated that the nation’s economic survival is
strongly dependent on huge improvements in math and science
education. There needs to be a focus on funding in early
childhood education to better prepare our children for a more
advanced curriculum. In addition, there needs to be a
restructuring of how teachers are qualified so that scientists
and other professionals can have the option to teach. The
United States standing in technology has dropped to
seventeenth place world wide.
There will be an impending workforce shortage globally and
it will be the responsibility of each employee to focus on
their education and make it a life-long endeavor. The
communications between the business world and educators needs
to be improved. It is important that job requirements are
clearing defined and the career ladders available are precise
and easily understood within the company.
The San Diego Workforce Partnership initiatives are: To
strengthen both the basic job skills and “soft “ skills of
employee’s • Generate more internship opportunities •
Create career ladders and lattices for jobs • Establish
business and education linkages
Marketing Committee – Julie Wright gave an update
regarding the North County Profiles publication. A list of the
highlighted industries in North County is being complied and a
freelance writer from the Union Tribune will write the
articles. The Center for Entreprenomics committee development
had been pushed back due to the busy schedule of events coming
up. A web calendar was suggested by the committee as an
effective tool and member benefit for the SDNEDC. The
Marketing committee will use their contacts and resources to
support the Security and Emerging Technologies Expo on
November 17th.
Regional Infrastructure Committee – Paul O’Neal
suggested to the Board that the committee invite executives
from companies who are responsible for infrastructure projects
to their committee meetings. The Infrastructure committee
suggested a forum that the SDNEDC would host that includes
Nevada Hydro Company, the Public Utility Commission and San
Diego Gas & Electric. The committee will work with staff
in organizing this event for 2006. The Infrastructure
Committee was renamed the Public Policy Committee by a vote of
the board and will create working subcommittees as it deems
necessary.
President’s Report – Gary Knight gave an overview of
the upcoming events: • Annual Holiday Luncheon and Awards
Presentation • Security and Emerging Technologies Expo -
Chanelle Melad, Marketing Director for CIS, gave a briefing to
the Board regarding the Expo. She stated that the event is
designed to raise the profile of San Diego North as the
security hub for San Diego. Many of the companies making these
high tech security devices are based in North County. The Expo
is being held at the California Center for the Arts November
17, 2005 from 9 am – 5 pm with admission being free. Chanelle
gave examples of some types of technology that will be
exhibited at the expo such as, RFID, wireless mesh networks,
home automation, mobile surveillance and face recognition.

Security for the City of San Diego and Supervisor Bill Horn,

Emerging Security Technologies are Important to North
County |
|
The latest in RFID, surveillance, network security and
automation showcased with homeland security, government and
industry leader presentations.
San Diego County with its established defense industry and
burgeoning high-tech and wireless economic sectors is evolving
into a hub for emerging security technologies. “Most people
are unaware of how these technologies are impacting their
daily lives”, said Gary Knight Chief Executive Officer for the
San Diego North Economic Development Council. “The technology
is everywhere, from Red- Light Camera’s that monitor traffic
to Anti-theft Sensors in retail products to Card and Biometric
Sensors that give us access to our business offices and
parking lots. It’s happening so quick that most of us don’t
realize how pervasive it is, and it’s only going to increase,
both in the types of security devices and their
sophistication.”

The regional outlook for winter gas
prices |
|
Throughout the nation, natural gas prices have been rising
over the past few years, and industry analysts predict that
the trend will continue this winter. As a result, businesses
that use the same amount of gas and electricity this winter as
they did last winter will likely see their energy bills
increase.
The price your business pays for natural gas includes the
cost of the commodity itself – which SDG&E® buys on the
open market – plus distribution services rates. Factors
contributing to higher natural gas prices charged by producers
and suppliers include increased global demand for natural gas,
decreased production, and higher crude oil prices.
While the exact impact rising natural gas prices will have
on area businesses is uncertain, improving your business’
energy efficiency can help lower gas usage and control costs
when heating the office or using natural gas equipment this
winter. Here are some immediate steps your business can take
before the cooler weather arrives:
• Schedule an on-site energy analysis by calling
SDG&E’s Energy Information Center at 1-800- 644-6133. A
representative will come out and survey your facility, and
provide a customized report on your current energy use and
offer energy-saving options. Energy analysis tools are also
available online, CD- ROM, mail and over the phone.
• Take advantage of energy-efficiency rebates for
installing qualified natural gas equipment at
www.sdge.com/express. Rebates are also available for
qualifying electric equipment.
Businesses can also try these simple energy- saving tips
for the office:
? Set your heater to 68° F; each degree you lower your
temperature setting can save on heating costs.
? Install programmable thermostats or timers to control
heater operation.
? Close the door and draw the shades at night and during
unoccupied periods to help your building retain heat.
? Seal off unused areas, and reduce or eliminate heating in
these spaces. Storage rooms, warehouses and other unoccupied
areas are a good place to start.
? Keep gas equipment operating safely and at peak
efficiency with regular maintenance.
Helping business customers save energy this winter is one
of the ways that SDG&E is committed to providing safe,
reliable energy and exceptional customer service.
